Definition of Chiropractic: The treatment of dis-ease by the manipulation of the spinal column. The proper functioning of your body depends upon effective communication between your brain and everything else. Subluxations interfere with this communication.
Definition of Subluxation: Vertebrae become misaligned (shifted very slightly, or become stuck in place). This causes pressure on, and irritation of, the nerves. Because the nerves are the channel for information between your brain and your body, when the nerves are inflamed, communication is less effective.
In a garden, plants need to receive water. To get the water to the plants from the faucet, a hose is necessary. What happens when you step on the hose? The water gets slowed down or cut off!
Your spine is the same as this hose – it is the conduit of “water” (information) from the “faucet” (your brain) to the “plants” (your body). When you “step on the hose” (or when your spine has subluxations) that information is slowed down or cut off.
You do not feel subluxations! Over time, the irritation of the nerves which stems from these subluxations causes pain as a symptom. Often, these symptoms are what prompt you to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor. As he or she helps your body restore communications, often the symptoms disappear. But you still need to keep coming back on a regular basis!
“Why?” you may ask. Over time, factors such as emotional and physical stress, bad posture habits, injury, environmental pollution, and other influences, will again cause subluxations to occur along your spine. Continued maintenance of the spinal column and nerves is necessary to allow your body to be able to keep on communicating and operating effectively.
Chiropractic care is much the same as building a house. Your body, as the house, needs a firm foundation of care. Missing an adjustment is like missing a brick in this foundation, and the more you miss, the weaker that foundation will be.
Chiropractic care is not just about coming to fix a problem. It is about proper maintenance of your body to remain healthy. Just as your car requires proper and regular maintenance, so does your body. You wouldn’t miss an oil change, and you shouldn’t miss an adjustment either!
Remember, if you use chiropractic care correctly, it will work for you. It is like using a fork – you can’t eat soup with it, but when you use it correctly it is a great tool.
